The first prize winner at the Rachmaninoff Piano Competition, London 2026 - Yichen Yu explores Schumann and Liszt.
Yichen Yu, piano Born in 2002, Yichen Yu began studying the piano at the age of four. He is currently pursuing his undergraduate studies in the Piano Department of the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM), where he studies with Professor Danwen Wei, Chair of the Piano Department and Doctoral Supervisor.
Yichen Yu has received numerous awards at piano competitions both in China and internationally. He won First Prize at the 79th Steinway & Sons Junior Piano Competition (2015), Second Prize at the Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians (2017), and Second Prize at the 22nd A. Scriabin International Piano Competition (2020). He was also awarded First Prize at the Bulgarian International Competition “Young Virtuosos” and Third Prize at the 5th Shenzhen International Piano Concerto Competition (2023). In 2025, he was admitted to several of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions, including the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. In 2026, he won First Prize at the Rachmaninoff Piano Competition in London.
As a young concert pianist, Yu has performed extensively across Europe, Asia, and North America. He has performed with the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov”, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, Irkutsk Symphony Orchestra, Torun Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Henan Symphony Orchestra, Cross Strait Art Youth United Symphony Orchestra, Central Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra.
In August 2025, with the support of the Liszt Society and Classical-D Music, Yu successfully presented Chopin recitals at St Marylebone Parish Church in London and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Yu is an artist represented by the Liszt Society UK.
