Songs for Ukraine
11th December
19.30
From £20.00
Songs for Ukraine Chorus is delighted to present this special Christmas concert, celebrating over a thousand years of Ukrainian Christmas choral music. The program features a rich tapestry of carols, beginning with ancient pre-Christian ritual songs that herald the new year, such as Oi dai Boh and Shchedryk (known internationally as Carol of the Bells). We will also explore 18th-century literary carols influenced by Italian Baroque music, including Ne plach Rakhyle, and the modern Ukrainian carols from the late 20th century, like Goi pytalasya knyazha korona.
Through this concert, Songs for Ukraine Chorus continues its mission to introduce UK audiences to the depth and beauty of Ukrainian musical traditions, while showcasing the resilience and vibrancy of Ukrainian culture.
We invite you to enjoy these timeless carols, infused with hope, joy, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people.
About Songs for Ukraine
The Songs for Ukraine Chorus was founded in spring 2023 by the Royal Ballet and Opera, as part of the Royal Opera House’s Creative Exchange programme, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Comprising over 150 Ukrainians, many of whom have been displaced by the war, the Chorus celebrates Ukrainian culture, resilience, and artistic spirit.
With members ranging from professional singers to newcomers to classical music, the Chorus proudly donates their time and talent in support of Ukraine’s people, cultural heritage, and artistic development.
Notable performances include Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at St. Paul's Cathedral, concerts at the Royal Opera House, the US Embassy Commemoration Gala at the Palace Theatre, the Dance for Ukraine Gala at the London Palladium, and media appearances on CNN, BBC Radio 3, and ITV. The Chorus also performed in a Christmas concert at Bradford Cathedral in December 2023 as part of the Royal Opera House’s contribution to Bradford City of Culture 2025.
This is the first performance of the Songs for Ukraine Chorus as an independent community choir.
