The Newark City Schools Orchestra has been thriving and making music for 60 years! Founded by Donald Montgomery in 1967, the Orchestra program has been a proud tradition of the city and the school district ever since. We are one of only two orchestra programs in the county, and so it is a unique and special opportunity that Newark Schools provides. The touring orchestra is made up of students aged 14 - 18, but at home we have students beginning their musical studies as young as 10.
The NCS Orchestra program has performed at Disney World’s Disney Springs, the Chicago Field Museum, and in 2009 performed at Carnegie Hall and was awarded 2nd place in the American Cup- a national contest of high school string orchestra programs.
We are thrilled to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the orchestra program in 2027, and we are kicking off that celebration with this English tour!
