The Japan Foundation, London is delighted to present an enthralling one-off concert that blends KAWAI Ikuko's globally acclaimed, refined brand of classical violin performance with traditional Japanese accompaniment courtesy of shakuhachi player KOMINATO Akihisa and hand drum player MOCHIZUKI Satasuke. 

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the majestic Actors' Church, the trio will perform a variety of pieces, including KAWAI's original compositions that have enchanted audiences the world over.

KAWAI Ikuko

Violin

KAWAI Ikuko was born and raised in Kagawa prefecture in Japan. She graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts and completed its graduate school. Currently, she is a professor at the Osaka University of Arts. KAWAI has performed with numerous internationally-renowned artists and orchestras, conductors, and vocalists. KAWAI's versatility also extends beyond classical music. In addition to working with pop musicians, she has collaborated with many renowned ballet dancers. KAWAI has composed for film, television dramas, and commercials, and many of her pieces have been used by international figure skaters.

KOMINATO Akihisa

Shakuhachi

Shakuhachi player and producer. Born as the eldest son of the KOMINATO school of folk music, from the age of five he received teaching from his parents and began stage activities.
KOMINATO is active both within and beyond Japan, performing across genres and mediums. He has performed abroad in over 100 cities in 30 countries. His work is highly diverse, spanning soundtracks for games, the opening theme for the NHK taiga drama Sanada Maru, recordings for anime series, and more. As an instructor, he passes on the art of shakuhachi playing to his students.

MOCHIZUKI Satasuke

Hand drum

Born 1996 in Tokyo. MOCHIZUKI began playing Japanese drums at a young age in Tokyo’s Ota Ward, and has since performed at various national-level events in Japan. He has also won the top prize at the Tokyo Shimbun Tokyo International Taiko Contest. While MOCHIZUKI has been active as a hayashi performer at both Japanese and international nagauta, Japanese dance, and kabuki performances, he has also worked more widely, providing his accompaniment to shows like the NHK taiga drama Naotora: The Lady Warlord and PythagoraSwitch.
