Join us for an exciting and varied programme in the fine setting of St Paul's Covent Garden. This programme includes classics from Vivaldi and Haydn and a work by Andrew Campling, who conducts the Marcel Sinfonia and the London Docklands Singers.

Programme:

Insanae et vanae curae by Haydn

Gloria by Vivaldi

In Paradisum by Andrew Campling

Haydn's Insanae et vanae curae is full of thrilling passages for the orchestra and dramatic renditions for choir. Meanwhile Vivaldi's ever-popular Gloria with it's unforgettable opening bars exudes a sense of pure joy; the poignancy of Vivaldi's setting of Et in terra pax is complemented by the melodic beauty of the Domine Deus and the exhilaration of the final chorus. To conclude our programme, Andrew Campling's In Paradisum is a lyrical and dramatic setting of the Requiem Mass; the work ends with these words (in translation): 'Choirs of angels receive you, and with Lazarus raised to eternal life may you for evermore rest in peace.'

London Dockland Singers

Choir

In late 1992, Andrew Campling founded the London Docklands Singers with a small group of friends and colleagues who enjoyed making music together. The choir soon grew and the first performance in April 1993 saw about 30 singers on the stage. Today, the choir numbers some 70 singers, aged from 20 to 70+ from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions, living and working all over London and beyond.

The choir performs mainly in churches in London’s Docklands and East London as well as in St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden and – every few years – at Southwark Cathedral. When possible, concerts help raise money for a variety of charitable causes. The choir’s annual Christmas events are generally in aid of the homeless charity CRISIS and have raised more than £30,000 since the year 2000.

Marcel Sinfonia

Orchestra

The Marcel Sinfonia brings together graduates from leading conservatoires in London such as the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The Sinfonia performs regularly in Southwark Cathedral and St Paul’s Covent Garden, and has also performed in Christ Church Cathedral Dublin and The Signet Library, Edinburgh. The orchestra’s repertoire includes concertos by Vivaldi, Marcello, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann and Poulenc. The Sinfonia’s name derives from the Marcel Suite, composed by the orchestra’s musical director Andrew Campling. www.andrewcampling.com
