In Her Own Words: Art Songs with Texts and Music by Women
2nd October
1pm
Free event
Mezzo-soprano Carola Emrich-Fisher and Pianist Lara Dodds-Eden have focused their collaboration on the musical works of women since 2022. They are passionate about working with living composers and engaging with contemporary research which aims to uncover historical works.
In this programme, the duo will share a whole range of art songs which are united by two key characteristics: both their music and their lyrics are written by women. Women composers are still woefully underrepresented in the established canon of Classical music. Artists like Carola and Lara have made it their mission to promote and advocate to right this imbalance.
This recital will be a journey of discovery: from little-known Romantic composers, such as Dora Pejačević, Marie Jaëll and Clara Faisst to 20th century composers Florence Price, Rebecca Clarke and Margaret Sutherland and to contemporary composers Virginia Firnberg, among others.
German-American mezzo-soprano Carola Emrich-Fisher has appeared as soloist and ensemble member in major concert halls of the US, UK and Europe. She holds an MM (distinction) from the Longy School of Music and a BM (honours) from New England Conservatory. Australian-born pianist Lara Dodds-Eden received her doctorate from the University of Toronto after postgraduate studies in the UK. As a specialist collaborator she has performed extensively in the UK, Australia, Canada and Europe.
