Voces Festival 2022 Concert 2
5 November 2022
In celebration of our musical connections and collaborations the Voces Festival presents an exciting programme with the Andover Museum Loft Singers performing traditional English songs in three- or four-part unaccompanied harmony. Followed by a vibrant virtuoso set of Latin American and European music and songs from renowned Anglo-Chilean group Quimantu.
We are delighted to welcome the Andover Museum Loft Singers to the Voces Festival following their wonderful collaboration with us last year. This unique and inspirational choir sings in three- or four-part unaccompanied harmony in a style that borrows much from the “West Gallery” and other largely rural singing traditions such as that exemplified by the Copper family of West Sussex. Much of the repertoire is local to their Hampshire base and is arranged for unaccompanied voices by local musicians.
We have all been deeply saddened by the untimely death of Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead, Belshazzar’s Feast, Faustus fame) on 14th September. He had been a very good friend of Mauricio Venegas-Astorga and Quimantu for many years, and as the much-loved director of the Andover Museum Loft Singers since 2001 he had of course been due to direct them in this concert. Their performance will reflect the deep legacy of Paul’s work in Hampshire and give us an opportunity to recognise his outstanding contribution to the English folk music scene.
In the second half of the concert the Anglo-Chilean group Quimantu will take to the stage for a vibrant virtuoso set of Latin American and European music and songs. With its line-up of talented musicians, Mauricio Venegas-Astorga’s band has quite deservedly gained an important reputation as one of the best, most creative and sophisticated groups of its type, performing with integrity, passion, beauty and great aesthetic care. The beautiful tone and phrasing of Laura Venegas-Rojas on lead vocals is brilliantly complemented by the musical expression of the group. They will be joined by guest bass player the remarkable Jorge Campos from Chile (Congreso, Fulano, Santiago del Nuevo Extremo).
The concert is presented as part of the Voces Festival, a festival of music and poetry celebrating Chilean & Latin American culture in the UK
From last year’s Voces Festival audiences… “The musicianship was world class. The atmosphere was intimate. A rare combination.”
“Fabulous from beginning to end. Such diversity, passion and inspiration from around the world”
“With a combination of sounds coming from the most diverse corners of Chile, Latin America and the world, the band led by Mauricio Venegas-Astorga and based in England, showed just how delicate and tidy the performance of folk music can be when united by the conviction of the universality of music.”
