Two classics of the repertoire by Handel and Bach are complemented by two premieres.
Andrew Campling's Concerto for trombone, piano and strings takes its inspiration from the rich treasury of Irish folk music. The stirring hymn St Patrick's Breastplate features in a number of guises, and is complemented by a gentle love song in the second movement. In the finale several Irish jigs symbolise a spirit of festivity.
Paul Martyn-West's Symphony No.1 in D minor was inspired by places of great natural beauty such as Ham Hill in Somerset and the rugged, dramatic seascapes of Lizard Point and Newquay in Cornwall. Paul's symphony also touches on universal themes such as lost innocence, rising militarism, jocularity and nonsense, and the triumph of the human spirit.
