LDS 30th Anniversary Concert - Handel's Messiah

19 November 2022

Book Tickets

The Actors Church welcomes back our beloved London Docklands Singers as the choir celebrates its 30th anniversary with a performance of Handel's Messiah.

This glorious oratorio, first performed in Dublin in 1742, has lost none of its power to move performers and audiences alike. Beginning with the good news of Christ's birth, as foretold by the Jewish prophets, the oratorio's central section deals with the Passion story.

The final section elaborates on the mystery of Christ's resurrection in music of astonishing vitality and intensity. This concert is in aid of the Whitechapel Mission, which has been serving the homeless and marginalised since 1876.

Andrew Campling

A graduate of Oxford University, Andrew is a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA). His music has featured on BBC Radio and has been performed in venues such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Purcell Room and the Royal Albert Hall. Andrew’s music has also received performances in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, USA and Australia. His piano music is available on a number of CD's including 'Celtic Rhapsody' and 'Piano Music'. Andrew has composed three symphonies, eight concertos, and many choral works. He directs the London Docklands Singers, the Thames Chamber Choir, the Choir of the London School of Economics and the Marcel Sinfonia. The Sinfonia gives concerts regularly in St Paul’s Covent Garden and has performed in Southwark Cathedral, Brentwood Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral Dublin. As a keyboard player Andrew has performed at the Wigmore Hall and at the Barbican Centre.

Marcel Sinfonia

The Marcel Sinfonia consists of graduates from conservatoires such as the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The Sinfonia has given concerts in venues including Southwark Cathedral, Brentwood Cathedral and Christchurch Cathedral Dublin. The orchestra's name derives from The Marcel Suite, a work composed by the group's founder and musical director Andrew Campling. The Sinfonia's repertoire includes concertos by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Marcello, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann and Poulenc. The Sinfonia gives annual concerto concerts at St Paul's Covent Garden and is a leading participant in the church's annual Mozart Fest.

London Dockland Singers

In late 1992, Andrew Campling founded the London Docklands Singers with a small group of friends and colleagues who enjoyed making music together. The choir soon grew and the first performance in April 1993 saw about 30 singers on the stage. Today, the choir numbers some 70 singers, aged from 20 to 70+ from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions, living and working all over London and beyond.

The choir performs mainly in churches in London’s Docklands and East London as well as in St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden and – every few years – at Southwark Cathedral. When possible, concerts help raise money for a variety of charitable causes. The choir’s annual Christmas events are generally in aid of the homeless charity CRISIS and have raised more than £30,000 since the year 2000.
