John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus

Concert 1

Widely recognised as one of the figureheads of British Jazz, John Etheridge has been described by Pat Metheny as “one of the best guitarists.” John rose to fame with the well-known rock/fusion band ‘Soft Machine’ and has played with a host of the greats including John Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Nigel Kennedy and Barney Kessel.

‘Sweet Chorus’ was formed as a personal tribute by John to his mentor and inspiration Stephane Grapelli. John and Stephane played and toured together extensively for several years in the 70’s and early 80s. The band features hugely established violinist Chris Garrick. Their virtuosic playing draws on the innovations of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s ‘Hot Club de France.’

Melodic, joyful, hugely evocative, swingin’ music will fill the wonderful acoustics of The Actors’ Church, Covent Garden, for a concert of classic hot club swing as well as contemporary classics.

Coloriage: The World of Richard Galliano

Concert 2

This exciting band pays tribute to one of Europe’s greatest living accordionists, Richard Galliano.  The group features established members of the London jazz circuit: Eric Guy (double bass), Harry Diplock (acoustic and electric guitars) and Mike Guy (piano accordion).

Since its formation in early 2020, the group has performed at a host of prestigious UK venues including the Green Note, Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club, The Vortex Jazz Club, Gypsy Jazz Festival of London, 1000 Trades Birmingham, The Parlour and others.

Over a career spanning more than fifty years, Richard Galliano has worked in a myriad of musical settings, from solo to orchestral and big band to quartet.  His music is a heady mix of styles including Argentine tango, French musette waltz, gypsy jazz and others.  The group honours his work performing his greatest compositions as well as similarly inspired originals by group members.

London Django Collective

Concert 3

The London Django Collective is a collaboration between several of London’s foremost musicians of the style commonly known as ‘Gypsy Jazz’. They regularly sell-out Ronnie Scott’s and, between them, have toured the world! The collective was born out of the desire to create a local and innovate forum for musicians influenced by the musical legacy of Django Reinhardt. Whilst their roots are based in the classic Django sound, their own innovation and creative flare has led them to compose distinctly contemporary music which sits beside the very best of London’s thriving jazz scene.

In 2019 they released five two-track EP’s, each led by a member of the collective. These EP’s showcased their individual take on the vibrant European style of jazz. Gypsy jazz has always had a place in the hearts of revivalists and traditionalists, but the London Django Collective have a vision of true progression for the style, whilst nodding to the great musicians who have come before them.
