Biographies

Sam Balchin

Trumpet

Sam Balchin - Sam grew up surrounded by music, in particular within orchestras, wind bands and brass bands, he started playing the cornet at the age of 6. Sam made his concerto debut whilst touring Germany playing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto and most recently played the Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto in Milton Keynes. Sam studied trumpet at the Royal College of Music Junior Department (RCMJD) under Torbjörn Hultmark during his years in Sixth Form, at which time he performed as a soloist in the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall. Sam has played in masterclasses with prestigious trumpet players such as Jason Evans and Pacho Flores. On graduating from RCMJD he received the Freda Dinn and Ida Mabbet Prizes. Sam was principal trumpet for the National Youth Orchestra (NYO), most notably performing at the BBC Proms 2022. Sam now studies under Paul Beniston at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is a full scholar under the Chartered Surveyors’ Company. Sam is also currently the principal trumpet of the newly formed Odyssey Festival Orchestra.

Morro Barry

Tuba

Morro Barry - Morro started playing the tuba when he was 8. Morro was principle tuba of the national youth brass band and later was in the National youth orchestra and most notably performing at the BBC Proms 2022. Morro played the Vaughan William’s tuba concerto at the Royal Festival Hall with the Chinese junior orchestra. Morro is a full scholar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and studies under Ben Thomson.

Sam Cox

Trombone

Sam Cox - Sam grew up in Medway, Kent, and started playing the trombone when he was 9 years Old. Sam studied at Trinity Laban junior department for 5 years, where he performed the Nino Rota concerto with the symphony orchestra. Sam was a member of the National youth orchestra of Great Britain, and now studies at the Guildhall school of music and drama. Sam is also passionate about jazz as well as classical music.

Luke Lane

Trumpet

Luke Lane - Luke started the trumpet at the age of 10, at Salisbury Cathedral School, where he was also a Chorister for 4 years. In his final year, Luke was awarded Head Chorister. From Salisbury Luke went on to study trumpet at Wells Cathedral School as a Music and Dance Scheme Award music specialist. Throughout his time at Wells he studied with Ross Brown and Simon Jones, covering all musical styles from the Natural Trumpet to Orchestral playing to Jazz and lead trumpet. While being at Wells, Luke became a member of the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) of Great Britain for 3 years. In Luke's final year with the NYO he played the Principal part in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Proms. Luke now is a full scholar at Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying under Will O’Sullivan where in his own words he 'met this fantastic bunch of musicians and have been fortunate enough to form a Brass Quintet with them'.

Sarah Pennington

Horn

Sarah Pennington - Sarah is a full scholar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is currently being taught by Philip Munds, having previously studied at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music for 7 years under Sue Dent. Sarah was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three years and won the position of joint principal horn in 2022. Prior to this, Sarah was part of the National Children’s Orchestra and the London School’s symphony orchestra. She now holds the role of principal horn for the Odyssey Festival Orchestra and the University of London Symphony Orchestra. Sarah has also recently given a solo recital in the Elgar room at the Royal Albert Hall, and performed in the final of the Royal College of Music Junior Department’s concerto competition.
