Over 20 concerts take place each academic year to provide numerous performing opportunities in Manchester’s prestigious venues such as the Royal Northern College of Music and the Chamber Choir has been frequently used as the visiting choir on BBC Radio4’s Daily Service programme. All first-year pupils at Stockport Grammar School learn to play a mainstream orchestral instrument.
Several hundred pupils participate in choirs, bands and orchestras or receive individual music tuition. In recent years SGS Chorus has performed large-scale works such as Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah and Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis. Recent orchestral highlights have included Tartini’s Concertino for Clarinet, Sibelius ‘Kol Nidri’ for ‘cello, Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Albinoni Oboe Concerto in D minor, Bottesini Double Bass Concerto in B minor and Bruch Violin Concerto, all with Sixth Form soloists from within the school. The school has had several members in the Hallé Youth Orchestra, National Children’s Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra, as well as in the Hallé Youth Choir, National Youth Choir and National Children's Choir. The school regularly undertakes European music tours and has performed at venues including Salzburg Cathedral, St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice and Bruges Cathedral in recent years.
